About The End.

When I look back at this trip later in my life, I think I'll say it ended at a certain point about ten miles out from Cape Henlopen. Cody and I were sweep, just like we were on the first day out of Long Beach, making sure our little peleton got in without mishap. We had left the amazing fruit stand that gave us all free, delicious fruit. I was riding along on Erik's bike (mine had developed a fatal crack earlier) when it hit me: I don't have to worry anymore. The Tour is over, and we have comple… Continue

Just the Facts, Ma'am.

I'm going to write a bit about my team. Actually, I'm going to write one fact about each member of the team, a fact I have discovered over the course of our journey together from Long Beach. Deb Go: When asked how she is doing, Deb will always respond with, "I'm ok" and a little nod of the head. Therefore, to accurately judge how she is doing, you must listen to how slowly she says it. The slower the "ok" comes out, the worse she is feeling. When I figured this out I realized that Deb Go is tou… Continue

Our Time, As It Turns Out, is Short.

I am now in the part of this summer that I have dreaded, longed for, and wondered about. Three days of riding left. At the end of the week, I will ride my bike into the Atlantic Ocean. And then the tour will be done. I don't know quite what I'll do at that point. I've told myself I'd cry, but that's up in the air. I've looked forward to that moment, especially on the hard nights when everyone's bike is messed up and I'm tired and there's 90 miles to ride the next morning. There are moments, esp… Continue

Annie's is a place in Heaven.

We are in Holly Springs Mississippi, and just had the dinner of a lifetime. Last night in Marvell Jacob Childerson used an extended simile to describe the (very, very good) banana pudding. He said, "This banana pudding is like if there were an unlicensed carpenter putting up a shelf in Heaven and the shelf fell out of Heaven and down to Earth because he put it up wrong and we were to eat that shelf. It would taste like this banana pudding." If that were the case and the banana pudding actually… Continue

Hello There East Texas

The people of East Texas have been immensely generous. And that's saying something, when you've been celebrated as a guest of honor the whole way across the southwestern U.S. Our time in Dallas was beautiful and busy. My own inspiration as to why I am doing this ride was deepened as I encountered The Oak's passion for what we are doing. In Tyler, we were able to rest as a team and meet more people who are passionate about what we are doing, such as Pastor Joe, who rode into Tyler with us and rod… Continue

A Good Thing

Today I went to VT Bike Stuff in Abilene, TX, and was very blessed by my time there. Tom, the owner, was a joy to talk to and they did a great job fixing my wheels and encouraging me on the trip. That's all. They're awesome. Check them out. Peace, Tyler Continue

All My Exes (Ex's?) Live In Texas

Texas forgot to finish their roads. Instead of putting down gravel, then a layer of tar, and then a layer of gravel, and then a layer of smooth tar, like they do in Minnesota and most normal states, they stopped at the layer of gravel and called it good enough. False! It is NOT "good enough". Imagine your bottom is Mike Tyson's speed bag and you get an idea of what it feels like to ride on a "chip seal" highway, as the TDOT calls these unfinished roads. If you go slow (10 mph), it's just bump… Continue

Tomorrow and Today

This stay in Phoenix has been one of the most rejuvenating experiences of my life - the whole team has been waited on hand and foot, and I feel like we're ready to tackle the climb to Payson tomorrow and Show Low on Thursday. From the moment we arrived at Desert Springs Church, they went out of their way to bless us. Upon arriving, we were given cold, wet towels to clean up with. We were fed, we were hosted in homes that redefined my understanding of luxury and beauty. Brady Miles, Josh McNeill… Continue

I am so happy.

I ride my bike all day and get to see the country in the best way possible. I love it! I was was experiencing a bit of pain due to some bike fit issues, but now they're getting resolved. I rode fast today and felt great. It's hard to explain how much I've been enjoying riding all the time. It's just great. I was thinking about this today: if I could choose to do something all day, riding my bike would be near the top of the list. And that's what I'm doing. Keep praying for the team as we ride t… Continue

An Update, Finally.

Hello Friends! I'm in El Centro, CA at El Centro Community Church. It's a great church. They have cold showers and lots of great AC. Today we rode 75 miles through the desert from Anza Borrego Desert State Park. It was 104 degrees. There was not a tailwind. It was really hot. The day before we rode 100 miles from San Diego to Anza Borrego. We climbed over 4000 feet up the mountains for 90 miles and then descended 3600 feet over 10 miles. It was amazing. I broke 50 mph. I have so much to say an… Continue

Insipired

Dear Friends, About a month back I was perusing the pictures on the Ride:Well homepage when a certain something stood out to me: Fantastic Moustaches. And so I said to myself, "Self, you should grow a moustache for the beginning of the tour." To which I replied, "Great idea." And so I'm writing this with a pretty thick beard that is disguising a moustache until the start of the Tour comes and people will be too busy looking at me funny for wearing spandex to care about my facial hair. Anyone… Continue

Mmmm Kay

So as of right now I am set to work 50 hrs a week all of May for a friend of mine. He'll pay me $3000 for my time, which will enable me to go on the Tour. God be praised. Pray for my perseverance! Much Love, Tyler Continue

Prayer Request

Hello everyone. I still owe North Central $2700 for this semester at school, and I need to be here next fall or else I risk setting my (already delayed) graduation date further back. If the money doesn't come through, I'd probably have to drop out of the Tour and work this summer. So. God is good, and I am excited to see what happens. Be praying for me. Thanks, Tyler Continue

Dunks

Hello everyone. So, I was dunking the other day (which is a great way to start any story) and I yanked on the rim hard. Now my forearms and wrists are really sore. I went for a ride on Friday afternoon before it started snowing and was unhappy to find that the usual jolts of street riding caused a lot of pain. Fortunately, I'm feeling better. And the snow is melting very quickly. The moral of this story is: when dunking, do not yank the rim. Merely pop it up and then down; you still get the l… Continue

That to which I am looking forward.

I'm trying to beat Eric, Drew, and Erin W. with this one. We were at the leaders retreat this weekend and Erin said, "We should write a blog about what we're looking forward to." So: I am very very excited to bring everyone from one coast to the other. It's simple, but especially as a mechanic, the knowledge that I did my best and succeeded in bringing everyone to the Atlantic Ocean will be a big thing for me. I'm excited to spend time with you, my dear reader. As far as I know, everyone who w… Continue

The weight of expectation

Hi guys. As the understanding of what I've signed up for has been sinking in, I've entertained thoughts like, "Really? All that money and time?" or "Wow. That's far to go with people I've never seen before" or just "Is this really a good idea?" And when I wait and hear in the stillness, the answer I hear still hasn't changed. I hear "Yes" and I know it's enough. And that's great. It's also a little disconcerting, and wonderful to hear. Could we keep each other in our prayers? I would be delig… Continue
