When I look back at this trip later in my life, I think I'll say it ended at a certain point about ten miles out from Cape Henlopen. Cody and I were sweep, just like we were on the first day out of Long Beach, making sure our little peleton got in without mishap. We had left the amazing fruit stand that gave us all free, delicious fruit. I was riding along on Erik's bike (mine had developed a fatal crack earlier) when it hit me: I don't have to worry anymore. The Tour is over, and we have completed the task God set before us.
I'm normally bad at experiencing the end of things...I tend to get caught off guard by them. But when I walked down the boardwalk, my bike over my shoulder, I knew I had come to the end of my time on the Tour, and that it was something I should celebrate. So I did. I shouted, I danced, I prayed, I shaved my mustache off and rode the Sea Star into the ocean. It was wonderful.
Now everyone is going their separate ways. As I write this Drew is driving the van down the Pennsylvania Turnpike on the way to Ohio, where we'll drop off Josh and the 'Derson brothers. Then it's on to Chicago, where Lisa Ralph and Jen will say adieu. Finally, Erik, Drew, and I will drive into Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, and I will spend that night in my bed at home. But the Tour ended in that moment in Delaware, when it hit me that our mission had been accomplished and it was over.
Praise be to God for everything. His love grows us like no other. Praise Him.
