We are in Holly Springs Mississippi, and just had the dinner of a lifetime.
Last night in Marvell Jacob Childerson used an extended simile to describe the (very, very good) banana pudding. He said, "This banana pudding is like if there were an unlicensed carpenter putting up a shelf in Heaven and the shelf fell out of Heaven and down to Earth because he put it up wrong and we were to eat that shelf. It would taste like this banana pudding."
If that were the case and the banana pudding actually was a shelf that fell from Heaven and into Barbie's casserole dish, the place the carpenter was putting the shelf up was probably the Annie's in Heaven, because they have one there. If you are ever within 100 miles of Holly Springs, do yourself and the world a favor and go there. Just ask anyone (literally) and they'll tell you how to get there. It's worth the drive. It's worth the bike ride. It's worth walking, hitchhiking, or canoeing.
Annie herself, along with her friend and helper Lou, came in an hour and a half after closing time and cooked us the dinner of a lifetime. The salad was scrumptious, the potato was delicious (try it with the pepper sauce!), the steak was PERFECT, the sweet tea was amazing, and the buns...THE BUNS! I don't know what she did to make them taste like that, but that was the piece of bread by which I will judge all other pieces of bread for a very long time. And then there were yams, molasses... everything was amazing. She even hugged us all when we came in!
At the end of our time Annie came out and sang an amazing rendition of the gospel song, "If I Could Help Somebody". I was deeply moved. It wasn't just a song-she was singing her life. And I'm stronger in my conviction to help Marsabit after seeing her passion for helping whoever came her way. That was a dinner I will never forget.
